Kliptown Community Pre-School
Kliptown is an old community situated in the Western Fringe of Soweto, boardering Eldorado Park. While some parts of Kliptown has been developed over the years, the community we are involved with, has been there for over 50 years, in what is regarded as an informal settlement, squatter camp if you like.
A pre-school was established in the early 1980’s for the children who reside in this community, these children mainly come from child/teenage parents.
Presently there are about 160 to 220 children who attend the pre-school. They have a baby unit for 6months and upwards, There are crèche type facilities for 2 to 4 year olds, and school readiness classes for 5 and 6 year olds.
We have supported them for the last 10 or so years, my involvement with them goes back 20 years.
Whilst there is a lot of development taking place around the Country, government says they have built 2.2 millions houses for the poor in years. My benchmark is Kliptown, where there is still no visible improvement in the lives of this community.
We as a company support Kliptown by paying the salaries of the teachers who work there on a monthly basis on average about R12k a month. We also pay for the teachers to be properly trained to deliver pre-school education.
The proceeds raised from your kind donations over the years at this golf day, has indeed been constructively used.
The first year we held a Christmas party for the children at Kliptown.
The 2nd year we renovated their entire kitchen, by having the floors tiled, walls painted, we put in a sink, a geyser. Etc.
The 3rd year, we took all the kids to the Joburg Zoo for the day.
The next year we took the kids to Mini Town at Wemmer Pan and last year we took the kids on an outing to Lola farm in Boksburg.
What differentiates us from other donors is that our employees get personally involved in this project. They give off their time, resources and also provide emotional and other support to this project. This is not just a cheque book exercise for us.
The kids really enjoyed this outing as they would not normally have the opportunity to visit such places. The joy and excitement on their faces, makes your and efforts worthwhile.
